ERASMUS is a part of SOCRATES program open to all types of higher education institutions (for which the term "universities" is generally used), all academic disciplines and all levels of higher education study up to and including the doctorate. Higher education plays a crucial role in producing high quality human resources, disseminating scientific discovery and advanced knowledge through teaching, adapting to the constantly emerging needs for new competencies and qualifications, and educating future generations of citizens in a European context. All such functions are of vital importance to the long-term development of Europe. More emphasis is consequently placed on teaching staff exchanges and transnational curriculum development.
ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits are a value allocated to course units to describe the student workload required to complete them. They reflect the quantity of work each course requires in relation to the total quantity of work required to complete a full year of academic study at the institution, that is, lectures, practical work, seminars, private work -- in the laboratory, library or at home -- and examinations or other assessment activities. Co-ordinator of Socrates/Erasmus program and ECTS system on FTiMS department is dr Jaroslaw Rybicki (e-mail: ryba@pg.gda.pl).
